Are Vegetables Good For Your Dog?

You know you need vegetables and fruit to keep your diet healthy. But what about your dog?

Dogs are omnivores, which means they can eat meat and plants. Many commercial dog foods are prepared with vegetables and fruits, as well as meat and grains. These products are also designed to contain all the nutrients a dog needs to be healthy.

So even if your doggie doesn’t really need extra vegetables and fruit in his daily diet, they won’t hurt him either. Some fresh and canned products can be part of good nutrition for dogs. You just need to know which ones.

Fruit and vegetable treats

Many pet parents give fruits and vegetables to their puppies. Some may have additional nutritional benefits:

  1. Apples are a great source of vitamins A and C, which keep the dog’s skin and coat healthy. Apples are also low in fat and a good source of fiber. But remember not to give it the kernel or the seeds.
  2. Carrots, peas, green beans, sweet potatoes and bananas are packed with important vitamins, as well as potassium, which is good for the dog’s muscles, nerves and kidneys. Their fiber can also help dogs stay regular.
  3. Oranges are a great source of vitamin C. Small dogs can have up to a third of a full-size orange, while a large dog can devour everything. Just be sure to peel it and remove the seeds.

While it’s good to give your dog these healthy foods, watch how much you waste your money. Treats should make up 10% or less of your dog’s calories for the day.

Help for overweight dogs

If you have a dog that may be a few pounds overweight, vegetables and fruits that are low in salt and sugar can be a good way to help them lose weight. For example, you can replace some of his dog’s food with green beans. This decreases the calories consumed but keeps it full. But don’t start a new diet for your dog without first discussing it with your veterinarian. A sudden change can disrupt digestion.

Your veterinarian can tell you how to mix the products to ease the transition for your puppy. A balanced diet is important, regardless of the weight of your dog.

Fruits and vegetables that dogs should not eat

  1. Grapes, raisins and currants are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure in some people.
  2. Onions, garlic and chives can be harmful in large quantities. They can cause blood problems in the dog, as well as diarrhea, stomach pain and nausea, if your dog eats a lot. The safest way is to avoid them completely
  3. Grocery store mushrooms can be safe, but wild mushrooms are toxic to dogs. It can be difficult to tell them apart. So it’s better not to take the risk.
  4. Never give your dog corn on the cob or fruit pits (such as peaches or avocados) – they could get stuck in the throat or intestines.

A vegetarian dog?

Meat is a dog’s main food need. It can therefore be difficult for him to follow a strict vegetarian diet. It takes a lot of preparation and planning to provide a dog or puppy with the proper nutritional balance it needs without meat. Many home-cooked vegetarian diets simply do not provide enough nutrients. If it is important to you that your dog does not eat meat, the best thing to do is to discuss with your veterinarian how to get it right.
