Traveling with your dog in a motorhome

Traveling with your dog in a motorhome is a great option. It avoids headaches in terms of: having to find a hotel where it is accepted, restaurants, means of transport such as plane or train, etc.

It is a different form of travel, where you can enjoy it to the fullest without having to pay more for accommodation or other necessities. We tell you everything below.

How to travel with a dog in a motorhome.

Although we think that when going in a motorhome, our dogs can go loose, you are very wrong.

To travel with a dog in a vehicle, it must go in an isolated area such as a carrier or in the trunk with a gate that does not allow access to the interior of the rest of the cabin.

Although there are people who do not like to put their dogs in the carrier, it must be considered that this is the safest means for everyone, since, in the event of an accident, the dog would be covered, or would receive whipping (as it can happen with belt) and prevent your escape in the middle of the road.

Regulations for traveling with dogs in vehicles

To travel with a dog we have to take into account certain rules. There is currently a regulation in force that requires that dogs and pets are not an obstacle for the driver.

According to the regulations of the DGT , traveling with the dog without the respective security measures in the vehicle carries a fine of € 80. The safety of all vehicle occupants (including pets) must be taken into account. The regulations quote verbatim:

The driver of a vehicle is obliged to maintain his own freedom of movement, the necessary field of vision and permanent attention to driving, which guarantee his own safety, that of the rest of the occupants of the vehicle and that of the other users of the vehicle. via. For these purposes, you must take special care to maintain the appropriate position and that it is maintained by the rest of the passengers, and the proper placement of the objects or animals transported so that there is no interference between the driver and any of them.

DGT

In addition to the aforementioned, in article 3 it also mentions that it is considered a very serious offense to drive in a manifestly reckless manner, and a serious offense to do so negligently, creating a risky situation. If a police officer or Civil Guard sees your dog loose in the car , it can be considered a very serious and reckless offense, so the fine can amount to € 500 and six card points, or € 200 fine, respectively.

Things to bring

When we decide to make the route in a motorhome with our dog , we must take into account what things we should take with us.

It is well known by all that dogs must be correctly identified with the microchip. In the event that they stop us and verify that the animal does not have its identification with the owner’s data, we may have a problem.

We must keep your health card up to date, with all your vaccines, deworming, rabies tags (in case it is mandatory in your autonomous community), etc. Only in case of international travel, the dog’s passport is necessary, which you can ask your veterinarian without problem.

To travel with your dog in a motorhome, you must bring a bed where it can rest, its feeder and water bowl, its sweets, its food, a collar, leash and its antiparasitic collar or pipettes. If you go to the field area, it would be nice to bring both things (collas + pipette).

If it is also aquatic, you can also take a vest and a towel for when you need to dry it off. Another thing that can come in handy if you travel in summer is one of those cold dog mats. They like it and they feel fresh once laid down.

Can I leave the dog in the motorhome?

This is a question that many people ask us. Leaving your dog in the motorhome or on the pitch can lead to a fatal mistake. In summer you have to be very careful with high temperatures. A car or a motorhome, in summer, can reach 50º, a temperature that no dog can endure and that ends up dying.

The motorhomes have their own air conditioning system, which can be left on while we are away. But who assures you that while you are away, the air conditioning is not going to turn off or break down? No one. Therefore, it is not advisable to leave dogs inside vehicles in summer.

During winter we do have more options and there are dogs that are very used to motorhomes and stay calm and relaxed while their owners are away. In any case, we must take into account the damages that this decision can cause us, as would be the case of the theft of the animal.

Dog-friendly motorhome rental

In Spain we still find it difficult to find companies that accept dogs in motorhomes.

There is currently a company that rents motorhomes that allow dogs . Of course, you have to return the vehicle in perfect condition and clean. Something that we see totally normal, since we always deliver the motorhomes that we rent clean, even if the dogs have not come with us.

It is about Irún Motorhomes. A company located in Guipúzcoa and with two reserve locations: Irún and Bilbao. We have tried a rental with them and it has been really good. They welcomed us very well and explained everything to us so that we did not have problems with anything, since it was our first time with a vehicle of this type.

We returned the motorhome clean, as they requested, and the trip with our dogs was a more than satisfactory experience. Now all that remains is for Spain to put the batteries to begin accepting dogs in more public places.

Advantages of traveling with a dog in a motorhome.

I don’t know about you, but I love traveling with my dogs to any part of the world. It is very complicated because each site has rules, mandatory vaccinations, you have to take into account the time, that the city you visit is dog-friendly, etc. But it is also true that it is a joy to have them with me.

I really enjoy the trips we make to fields, mountains and green areas. Personally, I love traveling around the north of Spain. Apart from the temperature (I don’t like heat at all), we can discover some amazing places in the open air and enjoy it with our best friends.

The advantage of going in a motorhome with our dog is, mainly, the amount of time we spend with him or her. In addition, you have all the items in the same place, you do not need to have to be changing or loading all your things.

Another factor to take into account, dogs do not have such a drastic and continuous change of place, as would happen to us every time we change cities. The dog will be aware of changes or movement, but his rest area will always be the same, so there will be no stress.

As the dog needs his rest time and to go out to relieve himself and move around a bit, it is the perfect excuse to go to stops with good views. I advise you to study all the stops on the road so that you can choose a good place.
