Your dog’s poop can give a lot of information about his health. Color, shape and texture are key clues to this. If there are alterations in any of these three categories, then you should be concerned.
Veterinarian Ana offers a series of points to take into account to know how to identify when your dog is healthy or sick due to its excrement.
What a normal dog poop looks like
Apart from that responsible, daily gesture and, yes, nothing pleasant about picking up your dog’s poop, it is logical that you do not think further on this subject. But one day when you go for a walk and the dog does his business, it turns out that the poop is not the usual one .
Something in its shape, color, and texture makes you suspect that your dog may have eaten something he shouldn’t have, that he has made him sick or even that he is sick.
The meaning of your dog’s poop can give you a lot of information about his health. Your dog is fine when …
- The color of the poop is brown.
- It is shaped like a log, usually in several pieces.
- You can easily pick it up with a bag.
So far, everything in order. Dog droppings are usually brown in color “lighter or darker, but always brown. The tonality depends on the type of food you eat: wet food, drier food, if the feed has cereal… ” , indicates the veterinarian Ana from the Veterinary Center .
In addition, you will know that everything is fine because “ the poop is solid, shaped like a churro or a log and you can easily pick it up with a bag without leaving any residue on the ground . Also that when squeezed –once inside the bag, of course– , it is not too soft, nor too hard, that it loses its shape “ , the veterinarian points out.
My dog is pooping weird: is that normal?
On the other hand, when your dog does some needs outside of this pattern, he may have a health problem . What you have to observe is whether it is habitual or punctual and based on this, go immediately to your veterinarian . You will know that something is wrong when:
- The poop is soft, liquid, or too hard.
- It has a different color.
- Small white streaks appear.
- Or when your dog hasn’t pooped for a couple of days.
Types of dog poop with their corresponding meaning
1. The color and shape of the dog’s poop changes
According to Ana, the color change can be due to several factors. “There are types of food that have pigments that are not digested and can give a different color. For example, if you go out with your dog to the field and the animal takes a lot of grass, the fiber and chlorophyll are often not well digested and it is normal for the poop to acquire a more greenish hue ” .
The same happens if the dog has eaten a piece of coal, it will not digest it and the poop will come out very, very dark. “Or if you have undigested blood, it is probably because you have blood in the last part of the intestine and the poop will come out reddish . “
2. Dog poop has white bumps
Another type of suspicious excrement is “ when the dogs have very small parasites and they look like grains of rice in the poop. As soon as we detect that, we have to go to the vet, even take a poop sample to do an analysis and look for parasites ” , advises the vet.
3. Soft poops
Sometimes dogs also eat things they shouldn’t , be it from the street, something from home – that snout in the garbage can – or simply some food has not done them well. That can lead to the dog making a soft poop . Of course, Ana warns that “it is important to distinguish if they are continuous episodes and if they are accompanied by vomiting or lack of appetite . We could be talking about gastroenteritis ” .
Dogs, like people, can also decompensate their intestinal flora, break down that path of water absorption a bit and suffer colitis or diarrhea. When should we not quit? “ When the dog has had diarrhea for more than 24 or 48 hours . And if even if we do a soft diet in that time it is not cut, direct to the vet ” .
There, a physical examination will be carried out and the professional will ask you a series of questions to be able to know what type of diarrhea it is: large intestine, small intestine, if there are other symptoms, abdominal pain, any obstruction , etc.
4. Another problem: very hard poop
“We can also find that instead of having diarrhea, our dog is pooping very hard or even going for a couple of days without pooping . More than two days without pooping and eating well would not be normal. There we do have to worry about taking the dog to the vet because there may be a problem of inflammation or even obstruction, ” says Anna.
As soon as the color, shape and / or texture of your dog’s poop is different than usual, it is important to observe during those first 24 or 48 hours if it is something that persists or not over time. And as soon as we check that it follows, it is essential to take the dog to the vet for a remedy as soon as possible . The health of your dog is also important.
